An auto insurance company was fined $975,000 for allegedly failing to protect the personal information of 45,000 New York residents.
The office of New York Attorney General Letitia James on Thursday announced the AG secured $975,000 in penalties from Root, which was affected by a data breach that was part of an industry-wide campaign to steal consumers’ personal information, including driver’s license numbers and dates of birth, from online automobile insurance quoting applications. The data thieves reportedly then used some of the stolen driver’s license information to file fraudulent unemployment claims at the height of
